Gloomy River

Posted by Alistair Keddie (Glasgow, United Kingdom) on 27 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A dark and boulder strewn River Etive flows magnificently through its gloomy glen in Lochaber, Scotland.

I'd travelled up with the intention of capturing some winter snow which typically melted before I got the chance. The weather turned mild, grey and damp and seemed never endingly dark and unremitting, though it did provide some good opportunity for shooting highland rivers, in flood from the rain and melt, the low light allowing for long exposure work to soften the water. So a series of dark rivers emerged flowing down gloomy highland glens full of mood and atmosphere. This shot captures for me much of that feel of dark desolation that sometimes weighs you down in the hills.
