Mangursta Needles

Posted by Alistair Keddie (Glasgow, United Kingdom) on 23 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Massive sea cliffs and stacks dominate the dramatic and wild west coast of Lewis near Mangursta, here catching the last red light of the dying sun above a foam flecked and storm green sea.

The west coast of Lewis is a wild and desolate place dominated by sea cliffs and violent storms. I waited around for four nights to grab this shot of the light hitting the cliff tops at sunset. Its westerly facing so its bound to happen sooner or later. Each time though, the weather changes so fast, that it comes down to luck and waiting, then its over, the sun is down, its another night. So I'm glad I got this shot after only four nights, glad the sea shows something of its power to smash up a wall of rock and glad the red beam of sunlight chose this night to strike.
